The ‘Alnico” magnet is driven by an extremely reliable brushless motor with a smoothly variable electronic speed control providing slow speed for titration work. The top plate is machined flat and epoxy coated for corrosion prevention, optional Teflon (PTFE) coating is available. Mains operated, plate size 200 x 180mm. Levitator may be said a little tongue in cheek but this simple apparatus does show how a magnet can ‘levitate’ another magnet. Consists of six doughnut shaped magnets trapped on an inverted u-shaped brass rod on a plastic base. The magnets have similar poles clearly marked. With two magnets placed above each other there is a large gap between them, as additional magnets are stacked the gap is reduced. The magnets don’t lie parallel to the base they assume an angle to it, giving the students some clue as to what would happen if they weren’t trapped on the brass rod.
