Oscilloscope
Two channel, 20MHz dual trace oscilloscope with large 135mm screen. The dual trace function allows you to apply two separate input signals which can be viewed alone, together or added together. Alternate mode allows two waveforms of different frequencies to be viewed. Controls are well labelled making the CRO simple to set up and use. Sensitivity 5mV (1mV with 5 times magnification) to 5V per division. Manual or auto trigger levels. A five times sweep magnification option gives a maximum sweep of 20nS per division. With 12 month warranty. For a suitable microphone and amplifier see SC5095 below. RECOMMENDED.
SC5024A $565 Includes two probes
which are often sold as extras.

Amplifier & Microphone for use with Oscillope (CRO)
Most microphones do not give sufficient signal to fill an oscilloscope (CRO) screen. This unit gives two outputs that are large enough to fill an oscilloscope's screen. The two outputs allow you to feed the signal to one or both channels on a dual trace CRO. Consists of a microphone and built-in amplifier, sound output is via a 3.5mm stereo socket. Supplied with stereo headphones and button cell battery. Has a built-in volume control and on/off switch. Use with adaptors and leads below for easy CRO connection.
SC5095 $18 amplifier microphone and headphones
SC5060 $12 adaptors and 1.5 metre lead to comvert from the 3.5mm stereo socket to two BNC plugs, BNC plugs are used on all modern CRO's.
Oscilloscope - hand held
A 10MHz sampling rate, single channel oscilloscope that runs off 5 x AA batteries or a mains adaptor (not supplied). Supplied with a probe and Instruction Manual. Range 5mV to 20V, time base from 200nS to 1 hour per division in 32 steps. Digital voltmeter readout, auto power calculation, 2 position signal storage.
SC5028 $349
Super Cheap Oscilloscope
This oscilloscope would have to be the cheapest that we have seen BUT we have to point out its limitations: it only has a single channel and the screen is just 70mm, like they say - you get what you pay for. The small screen size is impractical for class use. It also has a reduced bandwidth of just 10MHz. Input sensitivity is 5mV to 5V per division, and a sweep time of 0.1uS to 100mS (+/- 5%) per division. Complete with a probe. Input impedance 1MΩ+/-5%, 50pF. Rise time <35nS. Maximum input: 300V DC or peak AC.
SC5029 $174

Photogate
Consists of a self contained light source and photo detector mounted in a plastic ‘U’ frame, with an 8mm x 200mm mounting rod which can be clamped in a bosshead to allow the Gate to be used at any angle. On one side of the “U” is the LED visible light source operating from an 8-12V AC or DC power source connected via 4mm banana sockets, alternatively a 240/12V AC mains adaptor (Plug Pak) can be used and connected to a separate socket. The opposite side of the housing has the photo detector which behaves as an electronic switch that closes when the light beam is broken. For convenience a monitor LED on the side of the housing indicates when the gate has switched. The 4mm connection sockets are polarised positive and negative. Normally a clock or digital timer is connected to these sockets and the clock or timer itself provides the power to run the photo detector circuit. If connections are reversed, the Gate will appear to be permanently switched on. Two photogates can be used, one to start and another to stop a timer, e.g. Event Timer LB4057-001 or Timer/Counter LB4071-101, to study average velocities and acceleration. More Info (PDF 257KB).

Photo Electric Effect - Planck’s Constant
New digital model now has an LCD screen. With: integral Photo Tube; amplifier; a switched voltage or current meter; 12 volt microscope lamp; apertures and filters. Light is passed through the filters so that its wavelength is known. Photons striking the cathode of the Photo Tube release electrons, but applying a reverse potential stops the current flow, this potential is read on the digital meter and is proportional to the photons’ energy. It can be shown that the energy level is dependent on the wavelength not the intensity of the light. A graph relating energy and wavelength can be drawn to calculate Planck’s Constant. Experiments are clearly explained. More Info (PDF 733KB).
