Wind energy is becoming an important part of the global energy mix. WindWise Education is KidWind's comprehensive wind energy curriculum for school students in grades 6 to 12, designed to prepare them for a wind-powered future.

Understanding where wind comes from and how it is affected by varying landscapes is critical when siting and installing wind turbines. Using these materials, students will learn about the physical processes that “create” wind, analyze wind maps for optimal turbine placement and determine if there is enough wind to power their classroom.

At the end of these lessons, students will:

• Understand how topography and elevation affect wind speed
• Be able to identify optimal locations for wind farms based on wind speed
• Know how to interpret topographic and wind speed maps
• Understand and be able to explain the concept of wind shear
• Understand and be able to explain the concept of wind turbulence
• Know how wind shear and turbulence affect wind turbine performance
• Understand how trees, buildings and other obstacles contribute to turbulence
• Understand the relationships among wind speeds, power generation, power consumption and economic value
• Know how to analyse wind data
• Know how to interpret wind speed and power output graphs
• Understand the difference between energy and power
• Discuss energy consumption concepts
• Know how to collect and analyse local wind data
• Recognise tools used to collect data
• Know how to graph wind data
• Understand important wind data variables
