The IEC Inertial Balance Kit is a simple demonstration of the principle of determining the mass of an object from the frequency at which it vibrates in a system. In addition it clarifies the difference between mass and weight.
Gravity pulling everything towards the centre of the earth is the cause of something having weight. Weight and mass are almost equal but this instrument proves that gravity has no effect in a body having mass.
A platform clamped to the table is connected by spring blades to a second platform that overhangs the table and oscillates back and forth in the horizontal plane only. Weights placed in the oscillating platform are supported either by the platform or separately by a cord.
Oscillations can be timed with a stopwatch.

• Platform to clamp to the bench
• Platform to carry the mass and oscillate
• 2 spring steel support blades with screws and wing nuts
• Cylindrical heavy mass for hanging in the oscillating platform
• Length of thread to support the mass up from the oscillating platform
