IEC SIMPLE COPPER/CONSTANTAN THERMOCOUPLE
A 200mm long piece of standard thermocouple cable insulated with high temperature glass and having the two cores welded together at the tip to make a simple 'T' type thermocouple.

This thermocouple is a bonding of copper and constantan (60/40% copper/nickel alloy), the two wires are about 200mm long and are individually insulated in a woven glass sleeving, the two insulated wires are held together with an outer glass sleeving.

One wire is made of copper, the other is made of constantan, a 60/40% copper/nickel alloy. When the junction between the two different metals is heated, a small voltage is produced which is proportional to the temperature. This small voltage can be used with a controller to accurately control temperature.

Thermocouple Information:
A ‘Thermocouple’ is a device that will generate a small voltage when heated.

Two wires, each of a different material, are twisted and bonded together by welding.

When this junction of the two different metals is heated, a voltage is created at the junction. Since this voltage changes with the temperature, they can be connected to instruments that can be calibrated in degrees and are therefore used for the measurement of high temperatures.

There are several types of thermocouples which use different materials to suit the temperatures involved which can be as high as several thousand degrees Centigrade as found in ovens, furnaces, kilns and so on.
