Why use data logging in Primary Science?

General capabilities

In the Australian Curriculum, contexts of learning that utilize data logging strongly facilitate learning in the following general capabilities:

Literacy

Data logging facilitates a constructivist approach to learning that encourages students to construct their knowledge in a social context while engaging in scientific processes of predicting, observing and explaining their observations. The data logger enables real data to be collected and analysed in its various forms.

Numeracy

Data logging enables real data to be collected that provides students with opportunities to identify trends and patterns from numerical data and graphs. This can extend to statistical analysis as well as identifying relationships that allow prediction of data.

Information and communication technology (ICT)

Data logging provides students with opportunities to develop ICT capabilities while engaging in real world learning activities. A key benefit that data logging provides is the ability for students to capture and represent data while the event is still occurring. This provides opportunities for making real-time connections between data, its representation and the event.

Critical and creative thinking

Data logging provides data that students can use to make evidenced based decisions as well as the analysis and evaluation of that evidence. This is fundamental to the process of generating scientific as well as personal understanding of the science world.
