Primary Science: Getting started in data logging
Lab Book instructionsElementary Science with Vernier contains 44 student activities for Primary Science. Activities investigate the topics of temperature, motion, force, magnetism, light, electricity, and pressure. A matrix of how the Vernier experiments align with the Australian Curriculum Science Understanding [pdf] codes has been developed. SensorsEnvironmental data is detected by a sensor connected to a computer or data logging device. Typical sensors that are used in Primary Science include: Temperature, light, force and motion. The Go! range of sensors have a USB connection to a pc. Other sensors will require an interface to make the connection. InterfaceThese devices connect between the sensor and the USB port on the pc or laptop. Sensors without a USB connector require either a Go! Link adapter or a LabQuest interface such as LabQuest mini or LabQuest2. LabQuest mini supports multiple simultaneous sensors but still requires a pc with software for data collection. LabQuest2 is a standalone data logging device for multiple sensors. SoftwareThe connection pc must be running suitable software such as Logger Lite which is FREE with any of the Go! sensors or the Go! Link or LabQuest interfaces. Logger Lite is an easy to use software package for Primary Science that: controls the data collection process; displays data readings in numerical and graphical form and allows simple analysis of data collected. |
